Muskets

Muskets were very valuable items.

The nobles and the soldiers who went south or to Europe would bring them back to the Highlands.

Muskets were very popular weapons in the Highlands.

They were used to hunt deer, and that was a favourite pastime.

Weapons

Dirk (Dagger)

The Highland dagger or dirk was a special knife with a long blade. It came from knives such as the ballock knife or the dudgeon dagger which were used in the middle ages.

The handle of the knife was made of wood, horn or bone. Usually the blade would be sharpened on just one edge and the blade would have a row of dents in it.

From a very early period the sheaths had a pocket in them for a small knife, or a knife and fork.

Sword

These swords with basket hilts are not as old as the two-handed claymores or ‘big swords’. The oldest swords the Highlanders used had a simpler basket hilt.

Craftsmen more than likely made these hilts.
