The clan chief had authority over the clan\u2019s land.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He divided the land and rented parts of it to tacksmen, who were usually related to him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tacksmen were the \u2018middle class\u2019 of the clan.<\/p>\n

They were responsible for managing the land and they called out the clansmen when they were needed to fight.<\/p>\n

The tacksmen rented land to tenant farmers who gave work to cotters.<\/p>\n

The cotters would plough, plant, herd the cattle and dig peat. In payment they were given a small piece of land in which they planted food for themselves.<\/p>\n

After 1746 the social structure of the clans was broken

Clans and kinship<\/h2>\n

Clans were named as the children of the chief.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For example, the Mackays \u2013 Clann MhicAoidh \u2013 the children of the son of Aoidh; the MacKinnons \u2013 Clann MhicFhionghain \u2013 the children of the son of Fionghan; the MacPhees \u2013 Clann \u2019Ic a\u2019 Ph\u00ec \u2013 the children of the son of Fie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The clan chief looked on the members of the clan as \u2018family\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was his responsibility to protect them, especially in times of hardship and famine. The clansmen were always obedient to the clan chief.<\/p>\n

They were his private army.<\/p>\n

Malcolm Canmore became King in 1058 after he killed MacBeth.<\/p>\n

After that a clan system began to appear.<\/p>\n

The clansmen had two lifestyles.<\/p>\n

They were farmers for part of the year, planting seed and looking after cattle.<\/p>\n

In summer they were soldiers, following the clan chief into battle.<\/p>\n

Cattle stealing was part of their way of life.<\/p>\n
