Muskets<\/h2>\n

Muskets were very valuable items.<\/p>\n

The nobles and the soldiers who went south or to Europe would bring them back to the Highlands.<\/p>\n

Muskets were very popular weapons in the Highlands.<\/p>\n

They were used to hunt deer, and that was a favourite pastime.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Dirk (Dagger)<\/h2>\n

The Highland dagger or dirk was a special knife with a long blade. It came from knives such as the ballock knife or the dudgeon dagger which were used in the middle ages.<\/p>\n

The handle of the knife was made of wood, horn or bone. Usually the blade would be sharpened on just one edge and the blade would have a row of dents in it.<\/p>\n

From a very early period the sheaths had a pocket in them for a small knife, or a knife and fork.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Sword<\/h2>\n

These swords with basket hilts are not as old as the two-handed claymores or \u2018big swords\u2019. The oldest swords the Highlanders used had a simpler basket hilt.<\/p>\n

Craftsmen more than likely made these hilts.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n
